An Explanation Of The Most Prominent Electronics Displays
Electronics have evolved quite a bit since the 1980’s, when electronics displays really started to make their mark on the world. It’s interesting to see the hardware and electronics behind each evolution, as we can use it to better understand where the industry came from and where it’s going.
The liquid crystal display, or LCD, has been around for decades. Even in the 1970’s, there were innovative electronics devices that made use of monochrome colors to display basic data. As the industry was still relatively new to the consumer market, most of the displays were only put into the likes of calculators and other basic objects.
The high end televisions of today use plasma technology. It’s funny to think that this technology was one of the first innovations in display technologies- and was around back when computers could only display one color! The technology may not have been as advanced back then, as the computers that used them might only display the color green or orange. Today plasma screens can use millions of different colors.

Light emitting diode displays, known better as the LED, have also had their own separate evolution process. The LED display bloomed late in popularity, however. While the LED doesn’t have the color options and affordability of other technologies, it is extremely efficient when used in proper applications. An LED light, for instance, is much more energy efficient than your average light bulb currently in use by the average United States family.
The CRT monitors of the past still have their role in computer monitors, but are much less popular than they once were. During the 1990’s they were the standard in computer monitors and televisions. They were eventually weeded out as newer technologies took the lead, such as the LCD screens that have emerged. The problem is that CRT monitors are too bulky and conserve too much energy compared to new displays, and also are not as definitive in resolution quality.
It’s exciting to think of the new types of technologies that are emerging even now. New types of display technologies, such as the Apple iPad, make us rethink what an electronics display should be. Touch screens are playing a big part in future advances in electronics, and even more mind-blowing technologies are being developed as these are released. From outdated plasma displays to new touch screen technologies, the industry has come a long way.
In Conclusion
Displays will continue to evolve until we see something that can fit all needs. New displays will be more energy efficient, less expensive, support a wider range of functions, and give way to a more exciting time of innovation and inventions that will spur the technology industry completely.
